One of the Sunrise children who work
on the Community Project on Sundays.
A Community Aid Project was started during the year and every
Sunday afternoon some 30 or so of our older children go out
to a local village or pagoda where they assist poor families
with their daily chores. These include, planting and weeding
in the fields, cleaning homes of the elderly and infirm, helping
the Monks tidy the pagoda grounds etc. The purpose of the
project is to help our children understand how poor families
live and to realise that in this life they must give as well
as take.
Sunrise has raised funds in Australia to assist other orphanages
that are less well off. Currently we are supplying rice to
Cheys childrens home in Kompong Speu province
and the Nutrition Centre in Phnom Penh. We were also providing
rice to a government orphanage in Siem Reap but it was assailed
by management problems and we have now taken over the management
and funding of this project. Information about this new centre
can be found on our main menu under Sunrise Angkor Children's
Village.
We have given bicycles to both the Kompong Speu and Siem
Reap orphanages to enable their children to ride to school
and through the Leverton family cash has been raised to dig
out the pond at Cheys Childrens Home to enable
water to be collected for use in the dry season. When completed
this will allow crops to be grown in the dry season and help
to make the home more self sufficient.
Further initiatives will be followed up when time and cash
permit.
