Sewing School
The Sewing School started off with a donation of 2 treadle sewing machines and we now have 8 machines. A woman teaches the girls 6 days a week for half a day. Girls from surrounding villages turn up when their parents give them time off from working on their rice farms and it is wonderful capacity building for Sunrise to create goodwill with our neighbours.
It is our policy that girls take a sewing machine with them as their trousseau when they leave us to work, so it is even more important to have money to keep on purchasing new ones. A new treadle machine costs around US$130. So if there are people out there who can finance this, we would be very grateful. Often people offer to send us their electric ones, but this is not feasible, as more often than not the girls using these machines later in their life could be living in villages without electricity, so we like to go with what we know works for the local people – the good old treadle machine our grandmothers used to make clothes on!
Our Sewing Teacher earns US$150 a month – US$1800. We would love to find a sponsor to cover this annual cost.
Sunrise is very excited to announce the impending release of our new CD: Sunrise Musicians of Cambodia Khmer Classical Songs. Click here for details.
Sunrise now has a Facebook page.
