Sunrise Children's Villages

Computer School

A Computer School was opened in 1999 and is a huge success. You should see how these children soak up whatever is available to learn. Our youngest are learning the paintbrush program to get them used to the computers for their real studies. We have classes six days a week and the children are never late! We teach Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop and the older children are starting to learn Access, Computer Repair, AutoCAD and Web Page development. We can even teach network administration thanks to NZ Rotary club Waimate for providing us with a network server and software. Our IT training is designed to ensure our children have all the IT skills necessary for the kinds of jobs they will seek when they leave.

The children who want to make IT their career are provided with a strong foundation as they pursue further study. We believe they have improved employment opportunities in the computer field, earning them much higher salaries than would normally be the case if they didn’t have such good skills.

We have one Sunrise graduate who is working with Cambodia’s largest internet service provider on the help desk and designing websites. All this he was able to do with what he had learnt in the Sunrise Computer School.

Another boy is working as an architectural draftsman, designing offices and hotels using the AutoCAD program that we taught here.

And more recently, another graduate has been offered an internship with the ANZ Bank at the head office in Phnom Penh in their IT section.

Louch Tong Eang is doing a film degree at Flinders University in Adelaide while Louch Sopheak is doing a media arts degree at Queensland University.

Marvellous success stories!

Between them our three computer teachers earn around US$300 a month – it would be wonderful if we could find an annual sponsor for these salaries – a total of US$3,600.

As technology advances and our computers get worn out with the continual use by the kids, we have replaced our network of PC’s several times since the Computer School was opened. There have been many organisations that have donated computers over these years. JP Morgan Bank, Cathay Pacific Airlines, Hong Kong International School, ING Insurance (Hong Kong), Hewlett Packard and New Zealand Rotary club Waimate – thank you for your support!
