Sunrise Children's Villages

Community Service Project

A Community Service Project exists and once a month on a Sunday afternoon some 30 or so of our older children go out to a local village or pagoda where they assist poor families with their daily chores. These include, planting and weeding in the fields, cleaning homes of the elderly and infirm, helping the Monks tidy the pagoda grounds, etc. The purpose of the project is to help our children understand how poor families live and to realise that in this life they must give as well as take.

When this project was first introduced we knew the children were not happy about part of their only day off being spent in this way, but very quickly they grasped the concept that what they are doing is important and they are proud of what they are doing. Of course, there are also lots of opportunities to meet other young boys and girls in local villages that they would not otherwise get to meet!
